Just south of the Berkeley Pit in Butte, Montana, the Butte Civic Center stands to redeem the landscape.
Bringing in cultural events and business expositions to the former mining town, the building was opened
in 1954 while copper was still actively mined in and around the city. In 2000 the center was entirely re-

	PROPOSAL The Montana Digital Resurrection Initiative promotes Historic Preservation by creating digitally mapped three- dimensional environments, which can then be viewed by animation or user-controlled touring. The starting point for the project will be the Butte/ Anaconda National Historic Landmark NHL. Google has collected and published 3D imagery in other communities in this area; Missoula MT, Lewiston/ Clarkston WA, Spokane, Spokane, Valley WA, Kalispell area MT, and parts of Glacier National Park, areas in Yellowstone National Park, and Bozeman. So why not Butte, Uptown Butte/ Anaconda NHL, and Helena, Montana's State Capital? 3D IMAGERY OBJECTIVE This proposal is about digitally restoring in 3D the historical buildings, commercial, residential, and monuments, i.e., the mine headframes, mine yard buildings, etc., of Butte on the Google Earth map. First, the digital resurrection is made possible by taking photos by hand or using a drone and then placing them on 3D wireframes models representative of building structures using a sketch-up modeling program and then placing the photorealistic models on Google maps. More recently, restoration is also made possible by doing a 3D imagery collection with an airplane equipped with multiple cameras; a 3D depth map is created and overlaid with imagery.
